Rescued does not mean damaged. It means let down by humans.
Our program was founded in 2017 to work with a stable in New Orleans ensuring that the horses used in Mardi Gras parades end up in a forever home & not back with a broker, where their future is uncertain. We have helped over 100 horses thanks to your support!
My mission is to rescue. My dream is that one day I won't have to.

ABOUT THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF LOUISIANA
The Humane Society of Louisiana is a private 501(c)3 animal protection charity founded in New Orleans in 1988. We operate diverse animal care and protection programs, and we promote compassion for all animals. We work to prevent animal abuse and neglect in all its forms. We receive no government funding, and we rely on private donations for support. Our charity is managed by a small staff and an extensive network of volunteers. We are not affiliated with or funded by any national animal protection organization.

ABOUT THE MARDI GRAS HORSE ADOPTION PROGRAM
Most people love going to Mardi Gras parades and see horses being ridden by the krewes, however, don’t know these aren’t owned pets. The krewes work with a stable in the New Orleans area to bring in the horses needed for the parades each year. While the stable uses their own horses and some are rented from local owners, most of the horses are purchased from a broker. The stable has them checked by a vet and cares for them throughout the Mardi Gras season as they are ridden in the parades. During the parade season we work to get each of the horses paired up with a forever home to go to once the parade season ends. Of course, some horses arrive and are deemed not able to be ridden and we are committed to helping them also. No horse that enters the program will ever be at risk again! We typically have 15-25 horses per year and 3 or 4 weeks in which to get them adopted. Our goal is to ensure no horse goes back to the broker where it’s future may be uncertain. Whether it has long term needs, training requirements or needs a more skilled rider, we work to match up each horse with it’s best forever home.
